Likeness policy

Locking a face is the core of this product, which makes it the place where we have the most responsibility. This policy is what we actually enforce, not a statement of intent.

Generated references are the default

Every character reference MISE creates is generated. It is not a photograph of a person, it is not derived from a named individual, and it is not searchable back to one. A generated reference belongs to your production for the life of the project and beyond.

Real performers require a release

You may lock a reference from photographs of a real performer only where a signed release covering synthetic performance is on file. On the Studio tier the release is recorded against the character, is visible in the audit log, and travels with any export. On other tiers, uploading a real person's likeness is a breach of the terms.

A release must name the production, describe the permitted use, and be revocable on notice. We will not accept a blanket grant of a performer's likeness in perpetuity, and we will not help you obtain one.

Who we will not generate

  • Public figures. Our checks refuse a reference that resolves to a recognisable public figure — political, royal, religious or celebrity — regardless of the intent stated.
  • Minors in any sexualised context. This is an absolute refusal, and it is reported.
  • Identifiable private individuals who have not released their likeness, including from photographs supplied as "reference only".
  • Deceased performers without a documented grant from the estate.

Deception

MISE is a tool for making fiction. It is not to be used to fabricate a record of something that did not happen — a real person saying words they did not say, a real event that did not occur, or documentary-styled material presented as authentic. Narrative work that a reasonable viewer would understand as fiction is fine; material engineered to be mistaken for a record is not.

Disclosure

We think productions should say that a picture was made this way, and every export carries C2PA content credentials by default. You can turn that off for internal cuts. We will not turn it off for a delivery master without a written reason, and we will not remove it on request from a third party.

Reporting

If you believe your likeness has been used in material produced with MISE, write to studio@mise.film. We will investigate, and where a locked reference is found to breach this policy we will disable it across every project it appears in and notify the account holder. We will not require you to prove a commercial interest in your own face.
